What is microcurrent? A practical guide
Microcurrent devices are among the most talked-about tools in skincare. Here is what they do, what they cannot do, and how to use one safely at home.
What microcurrent is
Microcurrent is a very low-level electrical current, measured in millionths of an amp. In a facial, it is delivered through two conductive probes or rollers that glide over the skin on a layer of gel. You usually feel little or nothing beyond a light tingle.
What to expect
Used regularly, a microcurrent routine can temporarily tone and tighten the look of the skin. The effect is cosmetic and does not last, which is why devices are designed for short, frequent sessions rather than one-off treatments. Be wary of anyone promising a non-surgical facelift or permanent results.
How a home session works
- Cleanse and dry your face. Remove make-up completely.
- Apply a generous layer of the conductive gel recommended by the manufacturer. Microcurrent does not work on dry skin.
- Glide the device over each area following the pattern in the instructions, usually working upwards and outwards.
- Keep sessions to the time indicated in the manual, then remove the gel and continue your routine.
Who should not use microcurrent
Do not use a microcurrent device if you have a pacemaker or any implanted electronic device, if you are pregnant, or if you have epilepsy. Avoid broken, irritated or infected skin, and areas with recent injectables or procedures unless your practitioner agrees. If you have a medical condition, ask your GP first.
How to choose a device
- Design of the probes: it decides how easily you can follow the contours of your face.
- Gel and running costs: you will need conductive gel for every session.
- Warranty and UK support: buy from a UK seller who will handle repairs or replacements.
- Routine fit: a device you will actually use three times a week beats a more powerful one left in a drawer.
Our microcurrent device
Bio-Therapeutic bt-sculpt GEN2 was named Best Microcurrent Device in the NewBeauty Awards 2026. It pairs well with a cleansing step using bt-sonic GEN2.
Questions
Does microcurrent hurt?
No. Most people feel nothing or a light tingle. Stop if you feel discomfort.
How often should I use it?
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule. Most routines are a few short sessions a week.
Can I use serum instead of gel?
Only a product that is conductive and recommended for the device. Ordinary serums may not conduct.
Are the results permanent?
No. The effect on the look of the skin is temporary, which is why routines are regular.
